The Diarist of a Scene That Never Gets Old

Excellent profile of Michael Musto of the Village Voice as covered by the NY T I M E S.

“He juussst gets it!” shouted a man in a tangerine tank suit over the din of a Lady Gaga song in a nightclub in Chelsea late one Tuesday night. Mr. Musto, standing in a corner near the D.J., seemed as popular as the Lady herself.

A towering dandy dressed in red-and-white polka dots came over to tell him how much he liked his column. Another man, his face veiled in metal mesh, wanted to slip Mr. Musto a CD he recorded. Later the columnist was air-kissed by someone with a birdcage on his head.

“I couldn’t leave the house like that,” said Mr. Musto, who shuttles around town on a bicycle, a strap snug around his ankle so his pants leg doesn’t get caught in the chain. “I’d have to change in the cab.”

To an outsider it might all seem a little strange. But Mr. Musto, who is 54, defies the definition of a modern-day celebrity gossip. He doesn’t have a Facebook or Twitter account. In 2008, he started a blog, but he is primarily a word-on-paper guy; his second book of columns, “Fork on the Left, Knife in the Back,” will be released next month.

Hot new mix by DJ/Producer Franck Roger. His bio is below. Download link after the jump.

"To be free to do what I want !"

DJ since 13 years now and producer since 7 years Franck Roger has fully understood that making music and spread
worldwide the HOUSE MUSIC message is the most important thing in his life...

Indeed, Franck has multiplied the releases on labels as prestigious and well respected on the international scene as
Kenlou (Kenny Dope and Louie Vega /USA) Versatile (Dj Gilb'r / France), Crash (Dino & Terry / Canada), Flowers
(Japan), Needs (Germany), BBE (uk),Defected rds , Sole Channel ,King Street,Especial (Japan),Spacekat(uk) ....
Without a doubt Franck is the Dj / producer the most 'in view'.

Influenced by artists such as Stevie Wonder, Vince Montana, Mongo Santamaria and Blaze… Franck has developed
a true quality house sound with many faces (house, deep, dubby, spiritual, broken and soulful house productions..)
By producing his first single, the Straight Up label (Playing For the City) opened the doors for their young protégé, to
the Parisian deep house scene.

Since then Franck has worked closely with quality musicians such as Olivier M'selem (on keyboards) ,and more
recently Gene Perez and Mike Ciro from Masters At Work and the multi talented singer, Chris Wonder, with whom he
produces the majority of his songs.

With strong support from abroad (Little Louie Vega, Frankie Feliciano, Dj Spinna, Osunlade, Kerri Chandler , Dennis
Ferrer and many more ) Franck can prepare his future productions by exploring different horizons open to him and
by collaborating with contemporary artists such as Alix Alvarez, Arnold Jarvis , Osunlade , Dj Spinna and for 2006
some collaborations with Mr V and Jovonn for Real Tone Records that is his own label since 2004 with his partner
Lionel Marciano.

Music's lost decade: Sales cut in half

The disease of free

The battle for paying digital customers may have been lost before it had truly begun. In 1999, Napster, a free online file-sharing service, made its debut. Not only did Napster help change the way most people got music, it also lowered the price point from $14 for a CD to free.

"It's pretty easy to give away something for free," said Russell Frackman, the lead attorney for the music industry in its 1999 case against Napster. "It's not that the music industry thought the technology was bad, it just objected to the use to which it was being put."

Apple's (AAPL, Fortune 500) iTunes is credited with finally getting people to pay for digital music, but it wasn't unveiled until 2003.

In the time between Napster's shuttering and iTunes' debut, many of Napster's 60 million users found other online file sharing techniques to get music for free. Even after iTunes got people buying music tracks for just 99 cents, it wasn't as attractive as free.
