UNDER THE BRIDGE, UPTOWN!

September 22, 2010 Reviews Comments Off

In 1989, I was a freshmen at George Washington H.S. aka DUBS. That year Manny Ramirez was a senior and in my weight training class. Rumors of the Notorious Decepticons making there way to Dubs to start some trouble would circulate, members of the Wild Cowboys would come after school in there stolen motorcycles to show off some bike tricks and pick up girls and I went to my 1st Light House party. The word of a party underneath the GWB would spread like a virus. Flyers would be posted on the hallways to help spread the word. To get to the party you would have to walk west on 181st, cross the highway and walk through the dark woods and make your way towards the light house. The closer you got to the light house, the louder the music got and there it was, a group of Uptown locals dancing and partying to the hypnotic House Music rhythms of the time. … Continue Reading

Ayobaness! The Sound Of South African House

June 15, 2010 Reviews Comments Off

A version of that same DJ Mujava song appears on “Ayobaness! The Sound of South African House” (Out Here), a collection of dance music that you might hear in South Africa during the World Cup, though probably not at any officially sanctioned event. House music has been popular in the country for some time, especially the airy, hybridized variant called kwaito. Much of this album, though, reflects a more contemporary cosmopolitan style: songs like Aero Manyelo’s vibrant “Mexican Girl” and the creepy “Int’engekhoyo,” by DJ Fresca & Kudoskelem featuring Lelethu, could hold their own against competition from any other country. But for all of the authority of these songs, the most energetic and compelling tracks here are the ones that are closest to traditional kwaito, particularly L’Vovo Derrango’s “Resista” and Mgo’s “Yes (Bongo Disco Mix),” appealing for their specificity, not their universality. … Continue Reading
