Informative breakdown about the game-changing Roland TR-808 drum machine in a concise three minutes. Director Nelson George – noted journalist, author and hip-hop historian – traces the history and universal impact of the revolutionary musical device from Marvin Gaye’s “Sexual Healing” to “Planet Rock” to 808s & Heartbreak. D-Nice (nicknamed in his BDP days, “The Human TR-808″), and pioneering producers Arthur Baker and Juan Atkins give insight about the effects this mos’ def machine had on hip-hop, electro boogie and Detroit techno. Extraordinarily enough, as George reminds us, the innovative gear hasn’t even been manufactured since 1984 (no George Orwell).
