As a follow-up to their most recent, culturally-charged event, the
folks at RAZA have put together an event for December’s holiday
“festividades” that will be sure to ease one into the new year with the
fun, flair and fanfare that this monthly event is quickly becoming
known for.
This after work “hangeo” will continue to infuse their fans with a zest
for “baile” and will feature two sons of New York: Bryan Vargas &
¡Ya Está!
with their “Afro Latin Soul” rhythms, and DJ David Medina
(Bembe/Baraza) spinning his blend of Cuban, Latin, Brazilian, African,
and funk.
Bryan Vargas & ¡Ya Está!
invoke the spirits with the sounds of Rumba, Mambo and Son in what can
be best classified as “new school Latino groove.” ¡Ya Está!
have performed in front of capacity crowds at Central Park Summerstage;
Prospect Park Bandshell; The Knitting Factory; SOB’s and many more.
Their debut CD, aptly named “Afro Latin Soul”, was released Summer
2004, and was produced by Latin jazz great Arturo O’Farrill.
“…imagine Jimi Hendrix jamming with the Buena Vista Social Club. If you
believe that great music begins at a popular level, then you should
listen to Bryan Vargas & ¡Ya Está!” - NY Newsday.
Providing the musical selection for the evening is DJ David Medina.
Considered by many to be a musicologist, Medina is a veritable
renaissance man as seen in his extensive (and impressive!!!) list of
artistic accomplishments. He has been spinning Cuban, Brazilian,
African, tropical and world music in New York City since 1995 and has
played internationally since then. His passion for Cuban music marks
him among the foremost experts in the music of Cuba, which receives
little, if any, airplay and is rarely played in clubs throughout the
United States.
The evening at RAZA will commence with a (mute) screening of the film
“Our Latin Thing” (Nuestra Cosa). This musical documentary recalls the
exciting lifestyle of New York’s Latino’s during the early 1970’s. All
this to say: Get there early!!!!
