Before you started on this film, you had spent years documenting the New York house scene as a photographer. When did you begin to do that?
Passively I began in the mid-’90s. In that era, cameras were pretty much verboten in the clubs; I was just sneaking a camera in and doing what I could. But about 1999, I began to actively document the scene. There was a house-music radio show on WNYU on Monday nights called The Candy Store.
